Death Valley Photography Workshops

The Ubehebe Crater

4 Day Workshop
November 10-13, 2012
Group Size: 6-8 people

We will begin the workshop at Stovepipe Wells, where we will check-in to our lodging for the next three nights. While I will gather information ahead of time to learn each participant’s personal agenda, I would also like to focus some of our time on shooting black and white. Each participant will get one on one instruction from me so that I can tailor my teaching to your skill level.

Dunes Redux

To start we will make our way to the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes where we will capture the stunning vistas of endless sand mountains. We will discuss the techniques involved in showing the texture and sweeping lines of the dunes and show how to get an unforgettable black and white.

"Straight shooter" — taken at the Racetrack Playa, one of the many wonders in Death Valley

We will also visit the Racetrack Playa, the location of the amazing moving rocks. We will discuss the theories behind the movement of these rocks, and most importantly get some stunning images of them. I truly feel that a black and white treatment serves these images best, so I’ll share my favorite tips and tricks for how to master a monochrome image of these amazing rocks.

A desert fox

The third iconic photo you will walk away with is of the Salt Flats. The repeating patterns and sweeping vistas at the flats will provide endless opportunities for the landscape photographer, while the awesome detail in the salt will give the macro photographer the material of your dreams.

Due to travel distances and difficulty and the time it takes to get a great shot, I want to focus on getting these great images. We will stop and take others on the way as time allows, but we will want to budget adequate time to fully process these images as well. I want to ensure that all participants walk away with some amazing photos of one of the most spectacular places on this planet.
